  • 2 slices sturdy bread $0.40
  • 1 clove garlic peeled, $0.08
  • 1 medium-sized avocado $1.39
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice fresh, $0.14
  • teaspoon salt $0.02
  • teaspoon black pepper freshly cracked, $0.02
  • 1 pinch crushed red pepper $0.02

Preparation Steps

  • Cut 2 slices of sturdy bread. Toast the bread in a toaster or in a skillet on the stovetop until golden brown.
  • Rub the peeled garlic clove over the top of the warm toasted bread, making sure to fully cover the entire surface area.
  • Halve the avocado and remove the pit. Scoop out the avocado flesh from both halves and place it in a bowl. Add a small squeeze of fresh lemon juice (about 1 tsp), salt and pepper to the bowl and mash the avocado with a fork.
  • Divide the avocado mixture and spread it on top of each slice of toast. Top with a pinch of red pepper flakes and a pinch of sea salt (optional).

Notes

Using a loaf of bakery sourdough bread is recommended for thick slices. Whole grain bread also works well. Choose avocados that are slightly firm to the touch but not mushy.
