Ingredients

Cranberry Sauce Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries rinse if fresh
  • 1.25 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar or substitute with brown sugar or honey
  • 1-2 teaspoons orange zest from a fresh navel orange
  • 1 stick cinnamon or ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

Instructions

  • Rinse fresh cranberries and remove any bruised ones. Frozen cranberries are even easier—no rinsing or sorting needed.
  • In a medium saucepan, bring 1¼ cups water and 1 cup sugar to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Reduce to a simmer.
  • Add the cranberries, orange zest, and cinnamon stick. Bring back to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, until some berries burst and the sauce begins to thicken. (Optional: gently mash with a potato masher for more texture.)
  • Remove from heat, discard the cinnamon stick, and let cool to room temperature. Transfer to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate. Keeps up to 7 days or freeze up to 3 months.

Notes

For a naturally sweetened option, you can use honey instead of sugar, but white sugar is commonly used for this holiday classic.
